When people think of the UK, London, Edinburgh, or Manchester often come to mind first; I admit that when I first planned a trip to Birmingham, I didn’t have particularly high expectations. In my mind, it was simply an industrial city—one of the key birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. However, once I actually set foot there, I discovered that Birmingham was far more fascinating than I had imagined. It offers a blend of modern urban bustle and historical heritage, featuring canal-side scenery full of local charm alongside captivating shopping centers and a diverse array of international cuisine.
For this trip, I didn’t rush to tick off tourist attractions; instead, I chose to take a few days to explore the city at a leisurely pace. As I delved deeper, I found that Birmingham is the kind of city that grows on you the more you get to know it.
First Impressions: Where Modernity Meets History
Stepping out of the train station, I was greeted by a distinctly modern cityscape. Skyscrapers and glass facades glistened in the sunlight; the streets were wide and tidy, and the crowds moved briskly yet in an orderly fashion.
The area around Birmingham New Street Station is a hive of activity, with a concentration of shops, restaurants, and office buildings showcasing the city’s contemporary face. Yet, as I walked toward the old town, I saw many well-preserved Victorian buildings; their red-brick walls and antique clock towers seemed to recount the glorious history of the industrial era.
This blend of the new and the old left a deep impression on me.
Birmingham makes no effort to hide its industrial roots; rather, as it continues to develop, it seamlessly integrates its history with modernity.
Leisurely Moments by the Canal
One of the places I was most eager to visit in Birmingham was its famous canal network.
Many people are unaware that Birmingham boasts a canal network longer than that of Venice. I was genuinely surprised when I first arrived at the canalside. The calm water flowed gently, flanked by converted warehouses, cafes, and bars, creating a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
I took a leisurely stroll along the canal towpath.
Sunlight danced on the water’s surface, creating a shimmering play of light and shadow. Occasionally, narrowboats drifted slowly by, their owners waving leisurely to passersby.
Free from the clamor of a major city center, the area offered a rare sense of tranquility.
When my legs grew tired, I sat down at a canalside café and ordered a latte. Gazing out the window at the water, time seemed to slow down.
That afternoon, I did almost nothing—just daydreaming, strolling, and taking photos by the canal—yet I experienced the purest joy of travel.
Bullring Shopping Centre: A Shopper’s Paradise
If the canals reveal Birmingham’s laid-back side, the shopping center embodies the city’s modern vibrancy.

As one of the UK’s most famous shopping centers, the Bullring is a must-visit for tourists.
I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the space upon entering.
Hundreds of brand-name stores span multiple floors, offering everything from international luxury labels to affordable fashion brands.
Even if you aren’t a shopaholic, it is easy to spend half the day browsing here.
I started by visiting a few British brands to pick out souvenirs, then headed to the electronics section to check out the latest gadgets.
The interior features a modern, open design; expansive glass skylights flood the space with natural light, making for a very pleasant shopping experience.
At lunchtime, I made my way to the food court.
The mingling aromas of cuisines from around the world made it instantly difficult to choose what to eat.
After some deliberation, I settled on an Indian-style curry.
Rich in flavor and spices, the meal gave me a tangible sense of Birmingham’s multicultural character.
Victoria Square and the City Center
Birmingham’s city center offers plenty of spots worth exploring at a leisurely pace.
Victoria Square was my personal favorite.
Home to historic buildings, fountains, and artistic sculptures, it is a popular gathering spot for locals to unwind.
I found a bench and sat down to watch the passing crowds.
Office workers hurried by, while tourists paused to snap photos.
The atmosphere in the square was relaxed and open, allowing me to truly feel the city’s pulse.
There were also many street performers entertaining the crowds nearby. Some people were playing the guitar, others were singing pop songs, and children were laughing as they gathered around a magician.
These scenes brought the city to life.
Library of Birmingham: A Modern Architectural Marvel
I made a special trip to the Library of Birmingham. From a distance, the building looked like a piece of modern art.
Its metal-mesh exterior created a unique visual effect in the sunlight.
Stepping inside, I was even more amazed.
With its spacious, light-filled interiors, extensive collection, and comfortable reading areas, the place felt less like a mere library and more like a vibrant public cultural hub.
I took the elevator up to the rooftop observation deck.
Standing there and looking out over the city, I could see the skyline—high-rises, churches, and canals—spread out before me.

In that moment, I gained a whole new perspective on Birmingham.
It is not just an industrial city, but a modern metropolis brimming with creativity and cultural vitality.
Rediscovering Birmingham
On the day I left Birmingham, I walked along the canal-side path once more.
Reflecting on my time there, I realized the city had far exceeded my expectations.
It offers the energy of a modern metropolis, abundant shopping, diverse culinary options, and relaxing urban spaces.
It may lack the international glamour of London, but it possesses a unique character all its own.
For anyone who enjoys urban exploration, shopping, and good food, Birmingham is undoubtedly a city worth experiencing in depth.
For me, the greatest takeaway from this trip was rediscovering this often-underestimated city—Britain’s second-largest.
Birmingham didn’t win me over with spectacular tourist attractions; instead, it was the city’s authentic, diverse, and vibrant way of life that made me fall in love with it before I even realized it.
